French supermarket chain Carrefour, the world's second-largest in terms of sales, opened its first store in Japan in the Makuhari district of Chiba on Friday.

Around 1,000 people rushed into the store when the doors opened at 10 a.m.

A 36-year-old housewife from Chiba said she had come after seeing advertisements in leaflets guaranteeing the lowest prices possible.

"I want to see what kind of French children's clothes and food they have. But so many large stores are opening in the neighborhood, and it's a problem that the roads are getting congested," she said.
