U.S. and Japanese trade negotiators came to a deadlock Thursday on the third and final day of talks over Washington's proposal to extend an existing bilateral automotive trade pact set to expire at the end of the year.

When the United States made the proposal Wednesday, Japan demanded it present details on the framework for discussion on the proposed renewal of the auto accord.

But the U.S. side on Thursday failed to spell out details of its proposal, preventing progress in the negotiations, Japanese government officials said.

The U.S.-Japan working-level talks began here Tuesday to follow up on the 1995 bilateral auto and auto-parts trade accord.
