Uruguayan Ambassador to Japan Ramiro Piriz Ballon died of cirrhosis Friday at a Tokyo hospital, embassy officials said Tuesday. He was 65.

A multilingual career diplomat, Piriz's extensive portfolio of foreign service included ambassador to Egypt and the United Nations before he was appointed ambassador to Japan in July 1999.

He is survived by his 52-year-old wife Cecilia and two sons.

The Foreign Ministry will sponsor a farewell at the main chapel of St. Ignatius Church on Thursday from 4 p.m. Those wishing to attend are requested to arrive at the church before 3:45 p.m.
