This year's death toll from traffic accidents was 7,013 as of Friday, topping 7,000 four days earlier than last year, the National Police Agency said Monday.

As of Sunday, the death toll totaled 7,073, the agency said.

By prefecture, the highest number of traffic fatalities was seen in Hokkaido with 431, followed by 350 in Aichi Prefecture, 319 in both Tokyo and Chiba prefectures, and 302 in Saitama Prefecture, the agency said.

The total number of road fatalities last year came to 9,006.
