Mitsubishi Motors Corp. on Thursday unveiled the third generation of the Pajero, the automaker's popular sport utility vehicle, for the first full update of the core product in eight years.

The direct-injection diesel model has an engine displacement of 3,200cc. The company will introduce a direct-injection gasoline model with an engine displacement of 3,500cc on Oct. 1, company officials said.

MMC hopes to sell 3,000 new Pajeros each month. It also plans to introduce the update in North America and Southeast Asia next spring, officials said.

Since its introduction in 1982, the original Pajero has sold 470,000 units domestically and 1.26 million overseas. With the redesigned Pajero, MMC is targeting owners of former models looking to buy a new car, the officials said.

The officials stressed that the new Pajero is designed to be environmentally friendly and complies with new government regulations on fuel-efficiency and exhaust regulations.

The price of the new Pajero ranges from 2.993 million yen to 4.295 million yen.
