Police apprehended a man Tuesday night after he allegedly assaulted three armored car guards who were picking up between 6 million yen and 7 million yen from an electrical appliance shop in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward.

Authorities said Koji Furuya of Soka, Saitama Prefecture, threatened the guards with a high-voltage stun gun before macing them. He then also stabbed the guards, seriously injuring one, with a knife in a scuffle that ensued, police said.

The suspect then reportedly fled without touching any of the seven bags of cash at about 10:45 p.m.

Furuya, 50, the president of a waterproofing firm, was nabbed by police shortly after the security guards reported the attack.

He reportedly told police he needed the money because he is in dire straits, adding that he has about 60 million yen in debts.

Furuya was quoted as saying he came up with the idea of the robbery when he happened to see a security van parked in front of the appliance store a few days ago.
