A consumer coalition of 59 activist groups from across Japan handed an appeal to the government Oct. 8 demanding mandatory labeling on genetically engineered foods.The "Down with Genetic Engineered Food!" campaign, organized by the Consumers Union of Japan, asked both the Health and Welfare Minister and the Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry Ministry to require labels on all produce, seeds, animal feed and processed foods in which genetic materials were manipulated."We don't want to be guinea pigs," said Setsuko Yasuda, secretary general of the campaign. "Being forced to eat what we don't want to eat is a violation of human rights."
