Toshi to tomo ni mono-wasure ga ōku narimasu. As we get older, forgetfulness increases.

Situation 1: Mrs. Mori goes to a clinic and talks about her forgetfulness.

森: 最近、物忘れをすることが多くて、心配なんです。

医者: 年をとるとともに物忘れが多くなりますが、それは自然なことです。もしご心配なら、検査をしますよ。

Mori: Saikin, mono-wasure o suru koto ga ōkute, shinpai nan desu.

Isha: Toshi o toru to tomo ni mono-wasure ga ōku narimasu ga, sore wa shizenna koto desu. Moshi go-shinpai nara, kensa o shimasu yo.

Mori: I’m very forgetful these days. It’s worrying.

Doctor: As we get older, our forgetfulness increases, and that’s natural. If you’re worried, I can give you an examination.

Today we will introduce you to とともに and にともなって, which express two related changes of action or state. X とともに Y means “along with X, Y” and is often used in formal or written language. X is a noun or verb in dictionary form, and the change is expressed through such nouns as 増加 (ぞうか, increase), 減少 (げんしょう, decrease), 発展 (はってん, progress), 成長 (せいちょう, growth) or verbs such as 増(ふ)える (to increase), 続(つづ)く (to continue), 進(すす)む (to progress) or V in te-form+くる/いく (to become V), etc. In this construction, Y is also a phrase showing change. Examples: 経済(けいざい)が成長(せいちょう)するとともに海外旅行(がいがいりょこう)をする人(ひと)が増(ふ)えて来(き)た。 (As the economy grows, more people are traveling abroad.); 携帯電話(けいたいでんわ)の普及(ふきゅう)とともに公衆電話(こうしゅう でんわ)が減(へ)ってきた。 (With the spread of mobile phones, public phones have been decreasing.) XとともにY also expresses that Y happens at the same time as X, as in: 兄(あに)は大学(だいがく)卒業(そつぎょう)とともにドイツに留学(りゅうがく)した。 (My older brother started studying in Germany when he graduated from university.); 昇進 (しょうしん)とともに給料(きゅうりょう)が増えた。 (I got a raise in pay along with my promotion.)

Situation 2: Division head Ms. Yamani and section chief Mr. Okubo are talking about the company retirement system.

ヤマニ: 高齢化にともなって、我が社も定年制度を変えようとしているんですよ。

大久保: そうなんですか。それは我々にとってありがたい ことです。

Yamani: Kōreika ni tomonatte, wagasha mo teinen-seido o kaeyō to shite iru-n desu yo.

Ōkubo: Sō nan desu ka. Sore wa wareware ni totte arigatai koto desu.

Yamani: As the population ages, our company is also going to change the retirement system.

Okubo: Oh, really? We (the staff) would really appreciate that.

Xにともなって、Y also means “along with X, Y,” and is often used in formal or written language. But Xにともなって、Y usually shows change on a larger scale. When X is a verb, Xのにともなって、Y is used. Example: 技術(ぎじゅつ)が進歩(しんぽ)するのにともなって、生活(せいかつ)がさらに便利(べんり)になってきた。(As technology advances, our lives have become more convenient.)

Bonus Dialogue: Colleagues Mr. Tien and Ms. Shiba are chatting.

Tien: Recently, fake news has been increasing, causing a bunch of problems.

Shiba: It’s really disgusting! As social media becomes more popular, it seems fake news is spreading.

Tien: Really? Is anything being done to combat fake news?

Shiba: It seems that various measures are being taken, but I guess it’s quite difficult to deal with.

Tien: In the beginning, I thought that everyone would be able to communicate more as social media evolved.

Shiba: As technology advances, new worries spread, don’t they?
