国土交通省は5月22日、全国41地域に導入する図柄入り自動車用ナンバープレートのデザインを公表した。各地の名産品、景勝地などを配した。10月ごろから順次、交付する。「走る広告塔」として地域の知名度アップに期待がかかる。新しい地名を表示する「ご当地ナンバー」で「知床」（北海道）「出雲」（島根）など17地域の追加も決定した。図柄とセットでの導入で、2020年度の交付を予定している。
図柄入りナンバーは、住民にアンケートをするなどしてデザイン案を作成。図柄や色彩で、 数字などが読み取りにくくならないか、国交省が確認していた。(KYODO)

Translation
On May 22, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced the designs for license plates that will be introduced in 41 regions nationwide. The designs, depicting local specialties and picturesque scenes from the regions, will be issued from around October. It is hoped that these new license plates will act as "mobile billboards" to raise the popularity of various regions. They also decided to give 17 regions new "regional numbers," such as Shiretoko in Hokkaido Prefecture and Izumo in Shimane Prefecture.
The new license plates were created based on surveys of local residents' views of rough drafts of the designs. The transport ministry checked to make sure the designs and colors would not interfere with scanners.
