Krispy Kreme attempts to knock the Cronut from its doughy throne with "Waffnuts"

Move over Cronut, there's a new, wacky hybrid sweet in town. Krispy Kreme Japan has begun selling its new "Waffnuts" creations, which blend the venerable waffle together with the doughnut.

The Waffnut (¥240) comes in three flavors: strawberry, almond and green tea. Aside from the shape, the waffle element of these so-called Frankentreats comes across in the texture, which leans closer the slightly tough feel of a dessert waffle (except with more crumbs). The flavor, though, is dominated by the sweet frosting across all varieties, but is particularly strong in the strawberry Waffnut. Try them quick, before Krispy Kreme discovers another way besmirch the good name of the doughnut.
