(Dec. 9)

Translation

The International Olympic Committee approved a new reform for the framework of the Olympic program on Dec. 8, opening the way for a possible return of baseball and softball in a joint bid for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The IOC voted to scrap the cap of 28 sports to the Summer Games to allow new sports to be included, a process that would open the door to the inclusion of baseball and softball, which were been removed after the 2008 Beijing Games. Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Games are now free to choose to propose an event to the IOC. The organizers said they were delighted with the good news but added they would not immediately announce which sports or events they would be requesting to add. Karate and squash have also been mentioned in Japanese media as potential candidates for inclusion.
