(Sept. 10)

Translation

The Imperial Household Agency has compiled the annals of the late Emperor Hirohito, known posthumously as Emperor Showa, into 61 volumes that portray him as being distressed that he could not stop his country from going to war, according to Kyodo News. The 12,000-page record, which was released on Sept. 9, says the Emperor complained in July 1939 to Army Minister Seishiro Itagaki about the military’s “predisposition” as it built ties to Germany, Kyodo reported. The Emperor warned against calls for war with the United States, predicting in July 1941 that it would be “nothing less than a self-destructive war.” The record also shed light on some little-known or totally unknown facts, such as the practice in the Imperial family of celebrating Christmas, letters and essays written by the Emperor during his childhood and the nose surgery performed on him when he was 23.
