The 39th Sapporo White Illumination

The Sapporo Snow Festival, which attracted almost 3 million people to the capital of Hokkaido last year, is still over a month away. That won't stop the north from indulging in a little winter-themed fun, though.

If you're looking to get into a merry mood this weekend, Sapporo White Illumination has you covered. From Nov. 22 to Dec. 25, the city will be set aglow with more than 800,000 LED lightbulbs, turning the downtown area into a wonderland of glittering lights.

A section of Odori Park will also be lit up for a concurrent event, the Munich Christmas Market, so indulge in some Yuletide joy after strolling along the snowy streets and taking in the illumination displays. The market will have stalls selling seasonal goods and serving white sausages and mulled wine.

Don't worry if you get caught up in closing out the year, there's no need to rush over right away. The lights will shine brightly in various areas of the city until March 15. (Yuki Yamauchi)
