Fukuoka: Hakata Gion Yamakasa

Festival of the shrine, registered as the Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The highlight of this festival comes on July 15 when Yamakasa (gorgeously decorated floats topped with elaborate decorations including miniature castles, flowers and historical heroes' dolls) are drawn one after another by young men every 5 min. The floats are on display at 14 different places in the city during the festival period. Many more events are scheduled during the festival period.

from 4:59 a.m.: Parade of Yamakasa from the shrine, through the crowds of spectators

Location: Kushida-jinja Shrine and others, Fukuoka, Fukuoka

Kushida-jinja Shrine: JR Sanyo Shinkansen Line to Hakata Sta. From there, take Kuko Subway Line to Gion Sta., and then walk 5 min.
