Akita: Bonden

Dozens of Bonden (sacred bamboo baskets decorated with colorful cloth and streamers, 30kg in weight and 5 meters in length each) are carried by villagers who vie with each other to be the first in dedicating Bonden to the shrines.

Schedule & Key events:
● Feb. 11 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Boats transfer Bonden from Hanadate Pier to the other side of Omono River, and then people carry all these Bonden up to Izusan-jinja Shrine on the mountain
● Feb. 16 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Bonden Workmanship Contest is held at the festival site near Yokote City Hall
● Feb. 17 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Local young men carrying about 30 Bonden leave Yokote City Hall for Asahiokayama-jinja Shrine to dedicate Bonden

Location: Hanadate, Omono River, Izusan-jinja Shrine, Yokote City Hall, Asahiokayama-jinja Shrine and others, Daisen Yokote, Akita


Access:
(1) Omono River in Hanadate: JR Akita Shinkansen Line to Omagari Sta., and then take taxi (5 min.) (2) Yokote City Hall: JR Ou Honsen Line to Yokote Sta., and then walk 10 min.
