Izumi Kyoka ‘A Great Writer’ & Ball Jointed Dolls: Spirited Away, Stray Into the Labyrinth, and There a Devildom Woman

Izumi Kyoka (1873-1939) a Meiji (1868-1912) to Showa Era (1926-1989) author and scholar of literature often portrayed mysterious women in his supernatural tales. Whether they were Gods, demons or human beings, they were always enigmatic and unusual.

For this exhibition, Ryo Yoshida's unusual ball-jointed dolls breathe life into the characters of Kyoka's literature. Ethereal yet life-like, the dolls depict female figures from a range of Kyoka tales, tracing the oeuvre of the writer up to the Taisho Era (1912-1926).

Also included in the exhibition are woodblock prints, lithographs and letters handwritten by Kyoka. (Yukari Tanaka)
