Some people visit the Hokkaido town of Otofuke in winter to catch a glimpse of the wild swans that congregate there or bathe in a hot spring at Tokachigawa Onsen resort. Others go there for the Sairinka, illuminations in Tokachigaoka Park that are held each year from late January to late February. The event features 600 light structures, including a 6-meter-tall artwork surrounded by smaller lights. The lights are all programmed to blink in rhythm to music that is played across a PA system. Sairinka also offers a warm-water hand bath as well as activities such as sledging and snow rafting. (Yuki Yamauchi)
