A historic 1582 conference to decide the fate of the shogunate following warlord Oda Nobunaga’s death may not sound like the stuff of comedy, but Koki Mitani extracts laughs from the schemes and foibles of the principals with his usual wit and brio. For outsiders, however, the tangle of personal and political relations, as well as the sheer amount of verbiage to process, may result in a movie more read than watched. Edko Films’ DVD comes with subtitles.
