A breathtaking performance by Spanish flamenco dancer Miguel Can~as is bound to captivate audiences in Fukuoka next week.

The show, "Tablao: Miguel Can~as," will be held at Tiempo, a Latin cultural center in Fukuoka, on Aug. 20.

Can~as is a world-famous dancer, choreographer and actor. He learned flamenco from such masters as Paco Romero and Luisillo. Can~as also played an active role at the dance company led by Antonio Canales, another renowned flamenco dancer.

Currently, Can~as teaches the dance at a flamenco school called Amor de Dios in Madrid. The school has produced many of the genre's great dancers. His technique is also well reputed outside of Spain, as he has been invited to teach flamenco in the United States, Argentina, Italy and France.

In 2002 and 2004, Can~as was nominated for the Premio MX award, one of the most prestigious awards for plays and dances in Spain. He was acknowledged for his performance in the musical "Tarantos."

Tablao's organizers are keen to promote Can~as' skill at zapateo (shoe tapping), which they say is "incredibly speedy." The dancer exudes the typical power associated with male dancers, but at the same time his movements are flexible, a trait associated with female dancers.

For the Fukuoka performance, Can~as will be joined by flamenco dancer Talita Sanchez Guerrero, guitarist Thiago Vasquez and singer Curro Valdepen~as. The show will include a dinner option of Spanish cuisine at an extra ¥1,500, but those who prefer note to eat may purchase a drink ticket for ¥500 instead. Tables nearest the stage will be reserved for diners.

"Tablao: Miguel Can~as" will be held at Tiempo in Fukuoka on Aug. 20. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Advance tickets cost ¥3,800 for adults and ¥1,250 for elementary school and junior high school students.
