Inspired by a Japanese sense of beauty in subtlety, the Berlin dance duo of Malgven Gerbes and David Brandstatter will perform "Eulogy to the Shade" in Tokyo in early August.
The title of the performance is an English translation of "In-ei Raisan," an essay that novelist Junichiro Tanizaki wrote in 1933 and 1934, in which he stresses the importance of shades to a Japanese sense of beauty and analyzes indirect or dim light in such things as houses, Noh costumes and lacquerware.
Gerbes and Brandstatter will use a technique called "contact improvisation." Their bodies will contact each other gently, and then the dancers will improvise. This will make communication through the body more close and sensuous than otherwise.
"Eulogy to the Shade (In-ei Raisan)" will start at 7 p.m. on Aug. 2 and 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Session House (158 Yarai-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, near Kagurazaka Station on the Tozai Line.)

Session House will also feature four dance perfomances under the title "4 (four)" from 7 p.m. on July 19 and 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m. on July 20. Anna, Yukio Suzuki, Shoko Kashima and dancers from South Korea will perform. The last piece is choreographed by Hong Hye-Jeon, a rising force in the South Korean contemporary dance scene.
