"Waterside Garden I" (2001) by Noriko Yanagisawa

The current show at Tokyo's Hillside Forum features works by print artist Noriko Yanagisawa.

Active as a copperplate print artist since the late 1960s, Yanagisawa studied print-making and worked in New York during the '70s, and has exhibited in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Works on display in the current exhibition include 35 copperplate prints, and seven mixed media artworks created after 1985 composed of copperplate print fragments and other materials.

Natural themes such as trees, water and wind feature prominently in Yanagisawa's prints, along with the silhouettes of human bodies, sometimes twisted and misshapen. Depicted without reference to a specific time or place, the latter portray man as a universal being free from the boundaries of culture.

As well as solo projects, Yanagisawa has also worked on collaborative exhibitions and book projects with poets.
