Rock has predominantly been a male thing. Not that Joan Jett, Liz Phair, Courtney Love et al. haven't done their bit to inject a touch of aggressive femininity into the genre. But just walk into the average rock club and what does it resemble so much as a teenage boy's fantasy bedroom: black, sweaty and ripe with the smell of beer?

Milk, Tokyo's premier rock venue, was until recently no different. A trip to Milk was like a Freudian foray into the male sex drive. The walls were dark and festooned with drawings of buxom sex pots. Customers queuing for a drink were greeted with a long display of dildos.
