Pacquiao cements status as top fighter
ARLINGTON, Texas — Manny Pacquiao was more concerned with the set list for his upcoming concert than he was with Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight every boxing fan wants to see may never happen, but Pacquiao had a firm date to sing at Lake Tahoe before heading home and taking up his more formal duties as a lawmaker in the Philippines.

Mayweather bout looms for Pacquiao
ARLINGTON, Texas — The fight was long over and most of the biggest crowd to see a fight in the U.S. in 17 years had found their way out of massive Cowboys Stadium. Manny Pacquiao was in the shower, where one member of his entourage surely was in charge of selecting his shampoo while another had the task of making sure the towels were just right.

Pacquiao takes boxing's throne
Floyd Mayweather Jr. took his daughter bowling Saturday night after announcing his return to the ring. Good thing, because if he had seen Manny Pacquiao fight he might have figured out what boxing fans now know — that the future of boxing lies in the furious fists of a most unlikely new superstar.

Tiger's return may not be enough to cure golf
Welcome back, Tiger Woods. It's been way too long. Just eight months have passed since that Monday on the edge of the Pacific Ocean when neither Rocco Mediate nor a bum leg could deny you another U.S. Open trophy. Across the country on that magical day, productivity in offices dropped as workers tuned in to see how you would pull it off.

MLB salaries surviving downturn
It may be strictly coincidental, but that doesn't make it any less interesting. About the same time the New York Mets were spending millions on the closer they so desperately need this week, the owner of the team was facing possible losses of millions of his own as the victim of a fraud scheme even more audacious than the one baseball pulls on its fans.

Sports sound bites beginning to bite back
Boxers earn their money saying things that might get people to buy tickets. So it wasn't exactly surprising when Floyd Mayweather Jr. suggested to Ricky Hatton the other day that they might enjoy being prison cellmates together.

Just how dominant are Pats?
NEW YORK — No doubt more than one coach has wanted to send Bill Belichick the same one-fingered message that Wyoming's Joe Glenn relayed across the field when Utah went for an onside kick Saturday with a 43-0 lead in the third quarter of their college game.
