Leaders of the Group of Eight nations have for now agreed to disagree on expanding their exclusive club to include emerging economies, but the debate is expected to continue next year and beyond. The proposal by French President Nicolas Sarkozy appears to have made Japan uneasy as host of this year's G8 summit, and the initial outcome must have been a relief to the only Asian country in the group.

Expert urges 'proactive' diplomacy with U.S.
Japan should take a more "proactive" diplomatic role as part of efforts to strengthen relations with the United States in the post-President George W. Bush era, according to a seasoned U.S. expert on Japan. "The first thing, I think, is that Japan needs to be proactive and this is the time to prepare," said Kent Calder, director of the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.
