The Yomiuri Giants announced Monday they will send veteran outfielder Hisayoshi Chono to the Hiroshima Carp as part of the compensation package for the Tokyo-based team's signing of free agent slugger Yoshihiro Maru.

The Carp, winners of the last three Central League pennants, selected the 34-year-old Chono from a list of players made available by the Giants.

"It is just good fortune that a strong team like the three-time champion Carp have selected me," said Chono, whose contract for 2019, reported at ¥220 million ($2 million), the Carp now assume. "It's an honor to be considered a player they'd want, and I want to do my best to contribute to victories."
