Naomi Osaka cruised into the second round of the French Open with a straight-sets victory Monday over American Sofia Kenin.
The No. 21 seed, who claimed her first WTA title at the BNP Paribas Open in March, took 74 minutes to complete the 6-2, 7-5 victory over world No. 95 Kenin in the opening round at Roland Garros.
The American had won their only previous encounter as professionals — a 6-4, 7-5 win in qualifying for the ITF event at Vero Beach, Florida, in 2014 — but was no match for rising star Osaka this time around.
The big-serving Osaka took control from the outset, hitting 10 aces and 19 winners while committing 15 unforced errors to her opponent's 23.
Fighting back from a double break down in the second set, the 20-year-old Osaka won 24 of the last 27 points of the match to overwhelm her 19-year-old opponent.
Osaka's recent highlights on clay include a 6-0, 6-3 rout of former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka earlier this month in Rome. Her second-round opponent at Roland Garros is 2017 Japan Women's Open winner Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.
