Skier Onda places fifth in World Cup meet

DRAMMEN, Norway (Kyodo) Cross-country skier Yuichi Onda came in a season-best fifth in the 1.2-km sprint classical at a World Cup meet in Norway on Thursday.

Onda advanced to the quarterfinals in seventh, 1.73 seconds behind the leader in 2 minutes, 56.87 seconds before reaching the 12-man semifinals and then the six-man final.

"I didn't have enough stamina to compete at my best in four races in one day," said the 29-year-old. "I am frustrated for missing out on the podium."

Onda's best finish in the World Cup circuit is fourth in March 2007 and March 2009. At the Vancouver Olympics, he finished 13th in the individual sprint classical event.

Sweden's Emil Joensson claimed his third win of the season and fifth overall.

In women's action, Madoka Natsumi failed to get past the quarterfinals and finished 26th, while compatriot Masako Ishida bowed out in the qualification.

Vancouver triple gold medalist Marit Bjoergen of Norway captured her fourth win of the season and 34th overall.
