Farewell to Taiwanese cinema, but not to love
If Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang threw a dinner party, it's easy to guess who would be invited. Tsai has staunchly and consistently worked with the same small cluster of actors from his 1992 debut film "Rebels of the Neon God" through to "Stray Dogs," which will open in Tokyo on Sept. 6, under the Japan title "Picnic." Some of these actors are closer to him than family.

SunnyHills Taiwanese pineapple cakes
Taiwanese hospitality came to Japanese shores last month with the opening of a branch of pineapple-cake brand SunnyHills in Tokyo's ritzy Minami-Aoyama district. The store, designed by architect Kengo Kuma, is a beehive-like structure made out of hinoki (Japanese cypress) that gives off a relaxing lemon fragrance. You can sit and enjoy a complimentary piece of pineapple cake, with a light, flaky crust and a gooey pineapple jam filling, and a cup of oolong tea. A box of five cakes will set you back ¥1,500. 3-10-20 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo; 03-3408-7778; www.sunnyhills.co.jp.

Opinion article at war with itself
In his June 14 article, "Japan gropes for leadership," Kazuo Ogoura writes in tautologies and paradoxes. He asserts that Japan has built a "safe and efficient society" by concentrating on safety and efficiency, yet he insists that this effort has left Japan, "vulnerable to natural and human disasters," — in danger.
