Japanese fashion goes pop
Cast your mind back to the giddy days of 2010, when the group of subcultural artists Chaos Lounge issued its first proclamation. While its stated goal was earnest and postmodern, the output was seen as a shock to the art world as it brought the dregs of Japanese pop culture to "white cube" galleries. While Takashi Murakami got away with it by using original characters, the aforementioned group's crime was to splice copyrighted characters and imagery into collages, which ultimately mired the group in controversy.

Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo: Womenswear collections shake up the system
The six days that constituted Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo from Oct. 17 to 22 featured a wide range of styles, from pop and punk inspirations to commercial and avant-garde creations. It was the first collection to be sponsored by Amazon and, while many wondered if the involvement of the online retailer represented something of a shake-up, it was business as usual during the week: There were a few hits as well as some misses, but the lineup as a whole failed to impress. That said, there were still some tangible brighter moments.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo: No longer an outsider
The last day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo coincided with the Shibuya Fashion Festival, a platform for designers feeling constrained by the limitations of the official venue at Hikarie. As it was, the only condition placed on the participating designers' means of presentation was that they be open to the public and take place in the leafy surroundings of Miyashita Park in central Shibuya to the accompaniment of the passing Yamanote Line trains.

Fashion Week Tokyo: The menswear question — to be showy or simplify?
The February bankruptcy of Takeshi Osumi's seminal brand Phenomenon, and its departure from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo (FWT) before this season's March 17-23 shows, left a chasm apparent to all. And indeed, it's a mystery who may be able to fill the rather large shoes of the man who added such spice to the runway as wicker vests and medieval armor-inspired bomber jackets.
