'Suffragette': The strength of women
Believe it or not, "Suffragette" is the first feature film out of Britain to focus exclusively on the suffragette movement. What took the country so long? Completed last year, it has finally made it to Japan, and in the light of all that's happening in Western politics, it couldn't be coming out at a better time.

Helen Pankhurst: The suffragettes were just the beginning
As women march to protest Donald Trump's presidency and "Suffragette" is released in Japan, the words of Helen Pankhurst, activist and British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst's great-granddaughter, should resonate with many filmgoers.

Meryl Streep pipes up on doing what you love
One of the best lines uttered in Stephen Frears' film "Florence Foster Jenkins" comes from Meryl Streep in the role of Florence — which the actress gracefully repeats for me during her interview for The Japan Times.

'Florence Foster Jenkins': Not quite a nightingale
'Florence Foster Jenkins" is a fairy tale of glorious optimism and unclouded love. The titular lady (a real-life New York heiress and socialite during the 1940s) goes chasing after her dream of becoming an opera singer with a mountain of passion but zero talent. To say that Florence (played by the ever-brilliant Meryl Streep) can't sing is an understatement of monumental proportions. The lady has a lifelong love of music and insists at every turn that she can't live without it, yet her ear completely fails her when it comes to catching her own tone-deafness.

Meryl Streep is off key and on point as 'Florence Foster Jenkins' opens TIFF
In her newest movie, "Florence Foster Jenkins," Meryl Streep can barely carry a tune as she squeaks and squawks her way through classic opera music. But she wouldn't necessarily consider that an insult.

Meryl Streep as a runaway rocker in 'Ricki and the Flash'
It has been seven long years since Jonathan Demme came out with what is popularly known as a "woman's movie" (don't say "chick flick" — there's a difference) with "Rachel Getting Married." In many ways, "Ricki and the Flash" feels like the sequel to that earlier film. Both movies examined the behavioral dynamics of straying women who come back to the family fold due to a crisis. In "Rachel" it's a wedding; in "Ricki," a divorce.

Into the Woods: 'mashed up Brothers Grimm and hammy performances'
The fairy-tale reboot trend continues with "Into the Woods," Disney's big-screen version of the Stephen Sondheim musical that debuted on Broadway in 1987. Set in and around a creepy forest that looks like a leftover "Harry Potter" stage, "Into the Woods" mashes up a bunch of well-known Brothers Grimm tales with some hammy A-list performances by the likes of Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.

It's never too late to go in search of forgotten love
Filmmaker David Frankel has an ear for what women say — to each other, to their men and to themselves, though the last is not necessarily made audible to others.

'The Iron Lady'
In 1990, Ian (my brother's friend from Sheffield, England) came over to the house and showed us a fax that had been sent by his family. There was only one sentence, and it said: "You can come home now, she's gone." And that was how we learned of the political demise of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, aka The Iron Lady, who, according to Ian, did to England what Hamlet did to Ophelia — especially regarding the Falklands War.
