Great minds think alike. Focus Features' Oscar-bait drama for 2014 — about a prickly genius Cambridge grad who struggled through a traumatic personal life ("The Theory of Everything") — was rather similar to The Weinstein Company's contender, "The Imitation Game."

You know when a boy and girl meet, hit it off, but keep the relationship platonic — and it's sweet and memorable forever? This practically never happens in the movies. The last time it did (as far I can recall) was in "Once" back in 2006, directed by Ireland's John Carney.

Anna Karenina
'Anna Karenina" won the Oscar for best costume design this year, and like many a period literary adaptation, you might assume the frocks and greatcoats are the main attraction, the "value added" to what is necessarily a leaner version of an epic novel. Certainly director Joe Wright, who filmed Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" in 2005, knows the drill.
