'Man Down': War injuries go beyond the battlefield
'Man Down" is an indictment of war, and its message is one that focuses on its terrible lingering consequences — specifically, veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With many ending up homeless, suffering mental difficulties or becoming suicidal, PTSD is a real issue. According to a 2013 United States Department of Veterans Affairs study, 22 vets take their own lives per day. This a number used in the film, and yet Dito Montiel's tight, tense tale about a U.S. Marine returning from Afghanistan still manages to hide a tiny fragment of celebration — not of war exactly, but of the masculinity associated with it.

Wanted: Four women to save the world
In 1989, "Ghostbusters II" was released in theaters where it did well in terms of profit, less so in terms of critical response. Reviews didn't matter, though — the original 1984 film was so popular that fans couldn't wait to see a third sequel.

These women ain't afraid of the 'Ghost-bros'
Excuse the time-honored phrase, but the new "Ghostbusters" is a whole new ball game. The hype surrounding its U.S. release last month was considerable, and not just because it's a long-overdue followup of a beloved 1984 Hollywood classic: It has also dared to do what few have done before, which is to change not just the cast, but the entire cast gender.

Mister Donut masters the croissant-muffin hybrid
Although it hasn't nabbed the same headlines as the Cronut, the Cruffin — a croissant-muffin hybrid invented by Australian baker Kate Reid in 2013 — has achieved modest success in the U.S. Bakery chain Mister Donut has brought the fusion food to Japan (thankfully, they left the clunky "Cruffin" nickname behind), with three varieties available. The highlight of the trio is the blueberry custard (¥194), which features a mix of tart jam and whipped cream within the crispy exterior. As far as novelty hybrid desserts go, this one is pretty solid.

Song One: 'anyone not in a coma can see where this is going'
Years of working as a film critic have given me some sort of special mutant superpower to see deep into the cinematic future. That little cough in the first act will surely be a terminal illness in the last, and that seemingly casual close-up of the keys on the counter will be the crucial prop when the killer shows up 40 minutes later.

Good People: 'really bad money and a really lame script'
James Franco and Kate Hudson star as Tom and Anna Wright, an American couple trying to start their lives over in London by renovating an old house they inherited. Funds are short, and when their dodgy basement-dwelling tenant dies of an overdose and they find a huge sack of money hidden away, Tom is reluctant to tell the police about it, seeing this as the end to his debt problems. Anna, however, frets: "We don't know where this money comes from. This could be really, really bad money."
