Crunchyroll takes anime to a live level
Summer is high season for live celebrations of Japan's pop culture exports. The two largest events in the West, Japan Expo in Paris and Anime Expo in LA, drew hundreds of thousands earlier this month. August will see the U.S. East Coast's biggest anime convention, Otakon, move from Baltimore, Maryland, into more spacious environs in Washington, D.C., and later, the California debut of Crunchyroll Expo, a convention hosted by the most popular dedicated anime streaming service outside of Japan.

Japanese TV is making some progress in writing broader female roles
One of the best things to come out of the rise of streaming websites overseas has been an increase in productions that have featured great roles for women. This year alone we've seen some phenomenal acting from Elisabeth Moss on "The Handmaid's Tale" and powerful ensembles on Netflix's "Orange is the New Black" and "GLOW."

Measuring the economics behind a shift to streaming
An article in the Feb. 17 issue of the Asahi Shimbun describes a restaurant in Osaka where diners can watch J. League soccer games. The restaurant has three TV monitors hooked up to Sky PerfecTV, one of Japan's satellite broadcast services. At the end of January, however, the J. League shifted its exclusive broadcast contract from Sky PerfecTV to a video streaming service called DAZN. The selling point of the restaurant was always J. League games, so now the business' satellite setup is worthless.

The truth is still out there
"The truth is out there." This tagline to the sci-fi TV series "The X-Files" used to give me chills when it was first aired on Fox in 1993. The series touted an intriguing minimalist elegance — from its set designs to FBI agent Dana Scully's pristine white shirts and smart suits, contrasted with the slightly rumpled look of her partner Fox Mulder. It was an unusual aesthetic for the horror-heavy content derived from the two agents chasing serial murderers, government conspiracies and Little Green Men.

'Asia's Next Top Model' just as catty as America's
Reality TV staple "America's Next Top Model" recently hung up its Jimmy Choos after a stupefying 22 seasons, but its spin-off, Singapore-based "Asia's Next Top Model," is now in its fourth "cycle," airing locally on Fox Channel and Hulu.jp. Fourteen tall, slender beauties from across Asia compete to win a photo spread, representation by a modeling agency and other fame and fortune. While contestants come from as far afield as Myanmar and Mongolia, local viewers may be surprised to see no Japanese in the mix; the show's English-fluency requirement is clearly a barrier, and it's no coincidence that previous Japanese entrants were all hāfu (half-Japanese).
