SunnyHills Taiwanese pineapple cakes
Taiwanese hospitality came to Japanese shores last month with the opening of a branch of pineapple-cake brand SunnyHills in Tokyo's ritzy Minami-Aoyama district. The store, designed by architect Kengo Kuma, is a beehive-like structure made out of hinoki (Japanese cypress) that gives off a relaxing lemon fragrance. You can sit and enjoy a complimentary piece of pineapple cake, with a light, flaky crust and a gooey pineapple jam filling, and a cup of oolong tea. A box of five cakes will set you back ¥1,500. 3-10-20 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo; 03-3408-7778; www.sunnyhills.co.jp.

Cork: Meals start from the wine list at this L'As spinoff
As we gallop into 2014, how better to start this Year of the Horse than with a toast? Sake may be traditional on this auspicious day, but wine is just fine — as long as the setting is as bright and shiny as this brave new year, and if there's great food to match. Cork fits the bill perfectly.

Satisfy that sweet tooth with a limitless pick of the trolley
Nothing beats a great dessert at the end of a memorable meal — and never more so than when you're out for a yearend splurge. Many high-end restaurants offer double the pleasure, laying on two sweet courses, or even three if you count the chocolates and other tidbits served with your coffee.

Light bites of every flavor in Tokyo
Tokyo has seen more and more restaurants recently open with the express purpose of offering casual, light bites, rather than elaborate full-course meals. Close to home is fine, as long as we can nibble and graze, ordering a dish or two at a time, and interspersing food with drink and conversation till late into the night.

Where to find brunch in Tokyo, and just the way you like it
It's terrace season, and the thought of a drawn-out weekend brunch — sunglasses on, cocktail in hand — is likely to make any American go weak in the knees with homesickness. Fortunately for those in Tokyo there are several places that do a classic brunch, including both old staples and a few newcomers.

Later this month, author Shogo Imamura will open Honmaru, a bookstore that allows other businesses to rent its shelves. It's part of a wave of ideas Japanese booksellers are trying to compete with online spaces.
