Kawaguchi returns as Okada announces World Cup squad

Veteran goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi and striker Kisho Yano were the biggest surprises in an otherwise familiar selection as national team manager Takeshi Okada named his squad for the World Cup on Monday.

Shinji Ono, who many had tipped to make a late run into the 23-man roster, did not make the cut, while Sota Hirayama, Naohiro Ishikawa, Shinji Kagawa and Mitsuo Ogasawara were also among those omitted.

Kawaguchi has been a member of every squad since Japan first qualified for the world's top tournament in 1998, but he has not appeared for his club side, Jubilo Iwata, since breaking his leg in September last year.

The 34-year-old's previous international callup was in January last year, but Okada believes his experience could be vital as a backup to No. 1 Seigo Narazaki and deputy Eiji Kawashima in South Africa.

"To be the third-choice goalkeeper is difficult for Kawaguchi, but he is a leader and the other players respect him so I thought he would be useful for this tournament," Okada said.

"At first he lost his place in the team, but I spoke to him and asked him if he could accept being a substitute. He said he was fine with that. Before he got injured I was watching him to see how he would react, and I think he has become stronger mentally through the bad times."

Albirex Niigata's Yano was the other unexpected inclusion, but the 180-cm striker's size and strength tipped the balance as Okada looks to nullify the physical presence of Group E opponents Cameroon, the Netherlands and Denmark.

"He has great strength and works hard, and if the game looks like it's heading for a draw he can come on and pose a threat from set pieces, close down space and get forward on the counterattack," Okada said of Yano.

"We will find ourselves in various situations at the World Cup and I will need to think about the timing and the positioning and the choice of my players. With that in mind, the players I have chosen are not necessarily the best 23 individually but the best suited for the occasion."

Elsewhere, there were few surprises, disappointing those hoping for a repeat of the fireworks 12 years ago when Okada left star striker Kazuyoshi Miura out of his squad for Japan's World Cup debut in France.

Shunsuke Nakamura heads a tried-and-trusted group that qualified for the June 11-July 11 finals with two games to spare, although CSKA Moscow's Keisuke Honda and Catania's Takayuki Morimoto have come through over the past year to clinch their places.

"Honda moved to Russia and changed his playing style," Okada said. "He has become a lot more confident and dangerous around the box, and he can be a big threat for us. Morimoto might not start games, but he is physical and strong in front of goal."

Kashima Antlers defender Daiki Iwamasa also made the cut despite having only two international caps to his name.

"Until now I have been using (Marcus) Tulio (Tanaka) and (Yuji) Nakazawa together in defense, but if one of them gets injured we have to be ready to replace them," Okada said.

Japan plays South Korea in a friendly in Saitama on May 24 before heading to Switzerland for a training camp two days later. Okada's side opens its World Cup campaign against Cameroon in Bloemfontein on June 14, and the manager is determined to get off to a strong start.

"The first game is the most important," Okada said. "We've never won a World Cup game away from home, so if we lose it could have an impact on the players mentally. The Netherlands are one of the best teams in the world but there's always a chance we can beat them. It might be a slim chance, but it's our job to rise to the challenge."

Yuji Nakazawa

YUJI NAKAZAWA

Club: Yokohama F. Marinos. Age: 32. Hometown: Saitama Prefecture. Height: 187 cm. Weight: 78 kg.
Captain with over 100 caps, Nakazawa is the team's spiritual leader and a useful source of goals from set-pieces. Heading to his second World Cup at the age of 32, there are also question marks over his ability to deal with pacy strikers in South Africa.

Seigo Narazaki

SEIGO NARAZAKI

Club: Nagoya Grampus. Age: 34. Hometown: Nara Prefecture. Height: 187 cm. Weight: 80 kg.
Included in Japan's World Cup squad for the fourth time, although his long-running rivalry with Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi meant he only played in 2002. Experienced and reliable, the veteran is Okada's first-choice goalkeeper.

Eiji Kawashima

EIJI KAWASHIMA

Club: Kawasaki Frontale. Age: 27. Hometown: Saitama Prefecture. Height: 185 cm. Weight: 80 kg.
Proved a capable deputy for Narazaki when the first-choice 'keeper was injured late last year, keeping a string of clean sheets before dropping back to the bench. Kawashima's athleticism and growing maturity should see him assume the No. 1 jersey in the near future.

Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi

YOSHIKATSU KAWAGUCHI

Club: Jubilo Iwata. Age: 34. Hometown: Shizuoka Prefecture. Height: 180 cm. Weight: 77 kg.
Surprise choice for third-choice goalkeeper spot after apparently dropping out of the international reckoning early last year. Broken leg suffered in September appeared to end his chances once and for all, but Okada values the veteran's experience and leadership skills.

MARCUS TULIO TANAKA

MARCUS TULIO TANAKA

Club: Nagoya Grampus. Age: 29. Hometown: Brazil. Height: 185 cm. Weight: 82 kg.
Brazil-born center back who has emerged as a vital component since the last World Cup. Tall, tough and vocal, Tulio has a taste for joining the attack in search of goals and has also played in midfield at club level.

ATSUTO UCHIDA

ATSUTO UCHIDA

Club: Kashima Antlers. Age: 22. Hometown: Shizuoka Prefecture. Height: 176 cm. Weight: 62 kg.
Has been Okada's preferred right back ever since making his debut at the age of 19, although recent health problems have checked his momentum and cast doubt over his starting place. Blistering going forward, but not as physically robust as his defensive teammates.

YUTO NAGATOMO

YUTO NAGATOMO

Club: FC Tokyo. Age: 23. Hometown: Aichi Prefecture. Height: 170 cm. Weight: 65 kg.
Made his international debut after less than half a season as a professional after joining FC Tokyo from Meiji University. Makes up in athleticism what he lacks in height. The World Cup may put Nagatomo in the shop window for a move to Europe.

YUICHI KOMANO

YUICHI KOMANO

Club: Jubilo Iwata. Age: 28. Hometown: Wakayama Prefecture. Height: 172 cm. Weight: 76 kg.
One of the few Japanese players to emerge from Germany 2006 with his reputation enhanced. Komano is a versatile and reliable backup who can play on either flank, is tireless and strong in the tackle and delivers an accurate cross.

YASUYUKI KONNO

YASUYUKI KONNO

Club: FC Tokyo. Age: 27. Hometown: Miyagi Prefecture. Height: 178 cm. Weight: 73 kg.
Made his international debut in 2005 but has never been able to command a regular starting place. Konno is nevertheless an effective squad member who can fill a variety of positions across defense and midfield. A good ball-winner with a powerful shot.

DAIKI IWAMASA

DAIKI IWAMASA

Club: Kashima Antlers. Age: 28. Hometown: Yamaguchi Prefecture. Height: 187 cm. Weight: 85 kg.
Solid, tough-tackling defender who has won three straight J. League titles with club side Kashima but has only two international appearances under his belt. Not blessed with pace, but compensates with positional sense and fearlessness in the air.

YUKI ABE

YUKI ABE

Club: Urawa Reds. Age: 28. Hometown: Chiba Prefecture. Height: 177 cm. Weight: 77 kg.
Not the mainstay he was under Okada's predecessor Ivica Osim, but a solid squad member all the same. Can play virtually anywhere on the pitch. Also a free-kick specialist who may be eyeing a move to Europe after the World Cup.

JUNICHI INAMOTO

JUNICHI INAMOTO

Club: Kawasaki Frontale. Age: 30. Hometown: Osaka Prefecture. Height: 181 cm. Weight: 75 kg.
Included in his third World Cup squad, scoring twice in 2002 and appearing in two games in Germany four years later. Returned to the J. League with Kawasaki Frontale at the start of the year after a roving career in Europe. Inamoto is one of the squad's most experienced members.

YASUHITO ENDO

YASUHITO ENDO

Club: Gamba Osaka. Age: 30. Hometown: Kagoshima Prefecture. Height: 178 cm. Weight: 75 kg.
A non-playing member of the 2006 World Cup squad, Endo is now one of the first names on the team sheet, partnering Makoto Hasebe in the midfield engine room. Current Asian player of the year, but hasn't quite hit those heights again so far this year.

SHUNSUKE NAKAMURA

SHUNSUKE NAKAMURA

Club: Yokohama F. Marinos. Age: 31. Hometown: Kanagawa Prefecture. Height: 178 cm. Weight: 70 kg.
The team's talisman and best-known player. Dead-ball expert whose free kicks offer a constant threat of goals, Nakamura is nevertheless showing signs of age and has had a difficult year at club level. Will be determined to set the record straight after missing out in 2002 and underperforming in 2006.

MAKOTO HASEBE

MAKOTO HASEBE

Club: Wolfsburg (Germany). Age: 26. Hometown: Shizuoka Prefecture. Height: 177 cm. Weight: 66 kg.
Much-improved midfielder who has been ever-present since earning a recall under Okada in May 2008. Has added discipline and steel to his game since leaving Urawa Reds for Germany in 2007, and will perform a crucial role in defense and attack in South Africa.

KEISUKE HONDA

KEISUKE HONDA

Club: CSKA Moscow (Russia). Age: 23. Hometown: Osaka Prefecture. Height: 182 cm. Weight: 76 kg.
Dynamic attacking midfielder who has quickly established himself as one of the team's most exciting players. Has little international experience but is improving all the time with Russian club CSKA Moscow, who he joined at the start of the year. Could be Japan's trump card in South Africa.

DAISUKE MATSUI

DAISUKE MATSUI

Club: Grenoble (France). Age: 28. Hometown: Kyoto Prefecture. Height: 175 cm. Weight: 64 kg.
Skillful winger who has carved out a solid if unspectacular career for himself in France. Should make Okada's starting lineup for the opening game against Cameroon if the manager continues to play three attacking midfielders behind one main striker.

KENGO NAKAMURA

KENGO NAKAMURA

Club: Kawasaki Frontale. Age: 29. Hometown: Tokyo. Height: 175 cm. Weight: 67 kg.
Late developer who quickly cemented his place as a key squad member after making his debut under Ivica Osim. Suffered a broken jaw at the start of the season but fought his way back in time to make Okada's final 23. Likely understudy for Endo or namesake Shunsuke.

SHINJI OKAZAKI

SHINJI OKAZAKI

Club: Shimizu S-Pulse. Age: 24. Hometown: Hyogo Prefecture. Height: 173 cm. Weight: 70 kg.
The world's most prolific international striker in 2009 with 15 goals, including hat tricks in successive games against Hong Kong and Togo. Likely to be Okada's main target man in South Africa, although he can also play in a more withdrawn role.

KEIJI TAMADA

KEIJI TAMADA

Club: Nagoya Grampus. Age: 30. Hometown: Chiba Prefecture. Height: 173 cm. Weight: 67 kg.
Okada's first-choice throughout the qualifiers but has slipped behind Okazaki in the pecking order. Can miss chances but has also scored some wonderful goals, including one that temporarily gave Japan the lead against Brazil at the last World Cup.

YOSHITO OKUBO

YOSHITO OKUBO

Club: Vissel Kobe. Age: 27. Hometown: Fukuoka Prefecture. Height: 170 cm. Weight: 73 kg.
Former prodigy whose career has taken several twists and turns, including disappointing stints in Spain and Germany. Has not shown his best form recently, but Okada is a fan of the winger's speed, trickery and aggression.

TAKAYUKI MORIMOTO

TAKAYUKI MORIMOTO

Club: Catania (Italy). Age: 22. Hometown: Kanagawa Prefecture. Height: 180 cm. Weight: 75 kg.
Shaven-headed striker who became the J. League's youngest player when he appeared for Tokyo Verdy at the age of 15. Overcame injuries to establish himself in Italy — earning comparisons with Brazil's Ronaldo — but has struggled to make an impression in recent months.

KISHO YANO

KISHO YANO

Club: Albirex Niigata. Age: 26. Hometown: Shizuoka Prefecture. Height: 185 cm. Weight: 76 kg.
Tall striker who has found the net only twice in 17 appearances, but has often been used as a substitute to add variety to the attack or chase and harry late in the game. Far from prolific at club level either, but Okada values the Albirex man's physical abilities.
