Former Japan women's striker Karina Maruyama will retire at the end of the current season, her team Speranza FC Osaka Takatsuki announced Friday.

Maruyama, 33, scored the extra-time winner against host Germany in the 2011 World Cup quarterfinals before Nadeshiko Japan went on to claim the world championship.

Maruyama has appeared in 14 games in the Japan Women's Football League this season but has yet to score.

"I'm grateful to have met wonderful teammates at Takatsuki. I'll give my best in the remaining four games," Maruyama said in a statement.

Maruyama was not picked for the World Cup last summer in Canada. She was on the squad for the 2003 World Cup as well as three Olympic Games that followed, winning the silver medal in 2012 in London.
