An International Olympic Committee panel of review on Thursday finally handed down a decision about which athletes would be permitted to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympics, just 24 hours before the Games opening ceremony.

The IOC release reads: "271 athletes will form the team entered by the Russian National Olympic Committee from the original entry list of 389 athletes."

The decision puts an end to the scandal for the moment, and allows the Olympic world to move on to what everybody is here for — the sport.

IOC president Thomas Bach said that the declaration of athletes as being clean enough to compete allows the IOC to send "a very clear message to the clean athletes, and particularly to the clean athletes in Russia. This message is you can be successful outside such a system."
