The Yokohama BayStars have given up on their bid to acquire Matt McBride from the Oakland Athletics' Triple-A affiliate, it was learned Thursday.

The BayStars had reached a broad agreement with McBride, according to club officials, but the deal was scuppered when the 30-year-old infielder/outfielder was called up to the major leagues from the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday.

"Whether (McBride) gets called up to a (major league) roster or not is something that is beyond our control. It can't be helped," a BayStars official said of McBride, who also plays catcher. "We have another plan (to sign a foreign player) moving forward."
