Japan defender Atsuto Uchida has joined team training at his club Schalke for the first time since undergoing right knee surgery in June, the online edition of Kicker reported Thursday.

The 27-year-old right-back had an operation on his patellar tendon, the magazine said at the time as against the wishes of Schalke's medical team.

Uchida sustained a right hamstring injury in February 2014 to miss the rest of the Bundesliga season, and although he did play in all three games for Japan in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, a series of injuries curtailed him to 19 league games last term.

Uchida joined from Kashima Antlers in January 2010 and has 104 games under his belt for Schalke, who currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga.
