London Olympic gold medalist Kaori Matsumoto defeated Romania's Corina Caprioriu to win the women's 57-kg gold medal at the World Judo Championships on Wednesday.

It was the second world title and first in five years for Matsumoto, who has struggled with injuries after the 2012 London Olympics and was eliminated in the second round at last year's worlds.

The gold medal was the second for a Japanese female judoka at these world championships after Misato Nakamura won the 52-kg final.

Automne Pavia of France and Mongolia's Sumiya Dorjsuren won bronze medals.
