Terunofuji lost his first bout as an ozeki to Goeido on the seventh day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Saturday.

Terunofuji allowed his fellow ozeki to get the inside grip on the mawashi and was turned on his side after a sweep of the left leg by Goeido (4-3).

Terunofuji will face top-ranked maegashira Tochinoshin on Sunday at the turning point of the meet.

As sumo's newest star stumbled, yokozuna Hakuho and Kakuryu remained unbeaten, oozing class in their victories over a pair of No. 3 maegashira in Ikioi (1-6) and Kaisei (5-2), respectively.

Hakuho lured Ikioi out of the ring with barely a challenge from his man, and Kakuryu also defeated Kaisei by yorikiri as the familiar names took the lead in the title race.

Like Terunofuji, Kagamio also took a step back, the 14th-ranked maegashira suffering his first defeat at the hands of No. 12 Endo (5-2).

Sekiwake Tochiozan was also at 6-1 after beating komusubi Myogiryu (2-5) by hatakikomi.

Ozeki Kotoshogiku fell behind in the wins column again after second-ranked Takayasu (3-4) dodged him from the tachiai and sent him flying off the hill. Kotoshogiku needs a winning record at this basho to retain sumo's second-highest rank.
