Japan striker Yoshinori Muto got his first taste of action since arriving at German Bundesliga side Mainz from FC Tokyo, when he came on as a substitute in a preseason friendly against fifth-tier club Salmrohr on Saturday.

Muto came on for the second half of a 6-1 win for Mainz but was unable to get his name on the scoresheet. The 22-year-old started on the right side of midfield before switching to a lone striker's role.

"Once my teammates and I get to know each other's qualities then the level of play will gradually improve," said Muto, who had one shot which went wide 14 minutes from time.

"There is no need to rush. Once there is a mutual understanding, things will be fine."

Mainz signed Muto, who scored 10 league goals in 17 appearances for FC Tokyo this season, on a four-year contract.

He snubbed Premier League champion Chelsea in a favor of a move to Mainz, saying he was not ready for the step up to the English top flight.

"I looked up to Luis Suarez of Barcelona while I was at FC Tokyo. The Premier League is a great league, but I'm not ready to play for Chelsea yet. I don't want to hurry myself and want to develop steadily," Muto said when he was unveiled by Mainz on Thursday.
