Kosuke Hagino will likely not compete in the upcoming 16th FINA World Championships after suffering an injury at the national team's training camp in France, the Japan Swimming Federation announced on Thursday.

According to the JASF, Hagino left France on Thursday to return to Japan due to an injury that could be a fracture in his right elbow.

The 20-year-old Hagino won four different events at the Japan national championships in April. He is the defending world champion in the men's 200-meter individual medley. He also won silver in the 400 IM at last year's worlds in Doha.

Hagino will have a news conference on Friday after he is examined in Tokyo.

The world championships will be held in Kazan, Russia, starting on July 24. But the traditional swimming races are set to begin on Aug. 2.
