Kenzo Shirai booked his place in this year's world championships after winning the floor exercise title in the national individual apparatus championships on Sunday.

Shirai marked an outstanding 16.450 points at Tokyo's Yoyogi National Gymnasium with an even more dynamic performance than he has done in the past to clinch his place in the worlds for the third year running.

"I felt that had I been able to perform to my standards I was a lock to make the worlds," said Shirai, who earned the moniker 'Mr. Twist' at his eye-catching worlds debut two years ago. "I'm not all that surprised by the score."

Kazuma Kaya, who won the horse with 15.650, and Tomomasa Hasegawa, who came second in the horizontal bars, also earned spots at the worlds in the team all-around competition.

"I am happy that my pommel horse effort has been recognized," Kaya said.

The three will join five-time defending individual all-around world champion Kohei Uchimura, as well as Yusuke Tanaka and Ryohei Kato in the six-man roster for the worlds, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in October and November.

"We've got very young members joining in so I'll try to match their liveliness and lead the team," said Uchimura. "We'll all have the same aim of winning the team all-around. If we put in our usual performances, we can definitely win."

Among the women, 15-year-old Sae Miyakawa secured the final spot after winning the vault with 14.925 points. She will join Aiko Sugihara, Natsumi Sasada, Asuka Teramoto, Sakura Yumoto and Yuki Uchiyama on the plane to Scotland.
