Overnight co-leader Hideki Matsuyama's bid for a second straight Memorial Tournament title hit a bump on Friday, when he shot a 1-under-par 71 and fell into a six-way tie for fifth.

Despite poor accuracy off the tee, the Japanese star carded three birdies and two bogeys at the par-72 Muirfield Village Golf Club to finish the second round at 9-under-par 135, three strokes back of the leader, Sweden's David Lingmerth, who shot a 65.

"It was an exhausting round," said the 23-year-old Matsuyama. "I couldn't hit the shots the way I expected, missed fairways and was completely unable to reach the greens.

"That being said, my approach shots weren't bad at all. For failing to get on the greens as I did, it was impressive to only have two bogeys."

Matsuyama birdied the first and fifth holes, but his tee shots began to weigh him down on the par-3 eighth, when he found a bunker. He recovered but missed a 7-foot par putt and suffered his first bogey.

He missed the fairway on four straight holes from No. 10, but saved par each time. He birdied the par-5 15th, but bogeyed No. 17 when his second shot found a greenside bunker.

Compatriot Ryo Ishikawa shot a 73 to finish the second round at 4-over and failed to make the cut.
