Takashi Uchiyama, who won the 10th title defense of his WBA super featherweight crown on May 6, underwent elbow surgery on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Uchiyama underwent a three-hour procedure to clean out detached cartilage in his left elbow. He said he felt pain when bending the elbow during his last title bout.

"The troublesome area that was a cause for concern is gone, and now I want get even stronger," said Uchiyama, who is already looking forward to his next title defense.

He said he will begin doing road work next week and expects to resume gym training before long.
