The New York Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka threw 29 pitches Monday in his third bullpen session since being placed on the disabled list, and is scheduled to make his first rehab start on Thursday.

The Yankees made the announcement Monday, when Tanaka worked out at Nationals Park on the team's off day. The right-hander has been on the disabled list since April 29 with right wrist tendinitis and forearm strain.

The initial diagnosis ruled Tanaka out for about a month, but manager Joe Girardi declined to put a timetable on his return.

"I think you have to see where he's at and how many pitches he gets to," Girardi said. "The one thing you don't want is to have to be in a situation where he can only give you three or four innings."
