Undefeated yokozuna Hakuho cast away another would-be challenger in the form of Tamawashi to remain hot in pursuit of his sixth consecutive championship as the first week of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament wrapped up on Saturday.

Hakuho, who owns the all-time record and is seeking his 34th career Emperor's Cup, improved to 7-0 to share the lead with sekiwake Terunofuji and veteran rank-and-filer Aminishiki at the 15-day meet.

Rival yokozuna Harumafuji, in search of his first title in seven tournaments, is one off the pace at 6-1 along with rank-and-filer Toyonoshima.

In the day's finale at Bodymaker Colosseum, Hakuho was like greased lightning as he moved Tamawashi (2-5) to the edge once before getting his right hand inside on the front of the mawashi and throwing his opponent with a left-handed overarm technique.

He surpassed Chiyonofuji on the all-time list with his 808th career win in the elite makuuchi division — second after Kaio's 879.

Harumafuji sprang on Takekaze (1-6) at the tachiai and was nearly knocked off-balance by his diminutive opponent, who backed over the straw bales to a sixth defeat.

Mongolian Terunofuji won a battle of raw strength against Georgian-born Tochinoshin (4-3), heaving his opponent over the edge after getting both hands on the back of the mawashi while withstanding his opponent's fierce grappling effort.

Ozeki Goeido (5-2) saw off big man Ichinojo (4-3) after circling and moving into position for a yorikiri frontal force-out to snap a two-day losing skid in his first tournament at home since his promotion to sumo's second-highest rank.

Kotoshogiku (5-2) bulldozed winless Takayasu in a lopsided encounter, tackling his opponent over the ridge to also snap a two-day losing streak, while Kisenosato (4-3) hoisted out Bulgarian Aoiyama (1-6) after holding off his opponent's thrusting attack.
