Japan, featuring veteran Noriaki Kasai, was left out of the medals after coming fourth in the ski jumping team competition at the world ski championships on Saturday.

The team of Kasai, Daiki Ito, Junshiro Kobayashi and Taku Takeuchi finished with a total score of 831.2 points, 16.9 behind Poland. Norway, which scored the highest in both rounds for a total of 872.6, denied Austria its sixth consecutive title.

Kasai, who anchored his team in the first round, had a leap of 127 meters to put Japan in second, but Austria and Poland pulled ahead in the second round.

"Fourth actually feels the worst of all numbers. I'm really mad," said Kasai. "The wind was really wreaking havoc. I think we had the ability to get a medal. But things didn't really flow our way in the competition."
