Hideki Matsuyama shot a bogey-free 63 for his best round on the U.S. PGA Tour to surge into second place at the Phoenix Open on Saturday.

Matsuyama went from 27th in the second round to moving within three strokes of leader Martin Laird alongside Brooks Koepka and Zach Johnson after nailing eight birdies, including the last four holes, for a 10-under 203 total at TPC Scottsdale.

The 22-year-old Matsuyama, who won the Memorial Tournament last season for his maiden victory on the tour, said he hopes to have another error-free round Sunday.

"I didn't make any of the huge mistakes I was making up until yesterday and managed to take the chances for birdie I had," Matsuyama said.

"In the final round, if I feel like I have a shot at winning with three holes left, I'm going for it."

Ryo Ishikawa, who shot a second-round 73, missed the cut by one stroke.
